Introducing Volume 5 of the Wisdom Calling Devotional Series: Practical Wisdom for Life

by | Sep 18, 2025

The Wisdom Calling Devotional Series has now reached an exciting milestone: five completed volumes, 150 devotionals in all. From Genesis through Proverbs, this series has been tracing the theme of wisdom across Scripture — not just in the “wisdom books,” but in the unfolding story of God’s people.

And now, with the release of Volume 5, the journey continues with a focus on practical wisdom for everyday life.

The Wisdom Calling Journey So Far

Each volume of the series contains 30 devotionals, each two pages long. Designed to take about 15–20 minutes a day, these devotionals invite you to dig deeper into God’s Word while remaining realistic for daily study. Every entry includes:

  • Reflection questions
  • Tangible next steps
  • A model prayer

My aim has been to provide something with more depth than many of the 5-minute devotionals on the market today. I’m convinced we need to be intentional, serious students of Scripture — and this series is designed to help you do just that. Whether you’re studying personally or working through it with a small group, the devotionals are structured to foster meaningful growth.

Here’s how the five volumes fit together:

  • Volume 1 begins in Genesis, with creation, the Patriarchs, and the Judges — showing how wisdom is rooted in God Himself.
  • Volume 2 follows the rise of Israel’s kings, especially David, ending with Solomon stepping into leadership.
  • Volume 3 highlights David’s psalms, introduces Solomon more fully, and ushers us into the wisdom literature.
  • Volume 4 dives entirely into Proverbs, exploring wisdom’s many facets and the consequences of folly.
  • Volume 5 — the newest release — brings wisdom down to the street level, into daily life and work.

Spotlight on Volume 5: Practical Wisdom

While Volume 5 is deeply practical, it begins with theology. The first seven devotionals focus on what I call “pure theology” — seeking to understand God’s character and nature as He reveals Himself in Proverbs.

Proverbs tells us much about who God is: His works, His character, what makes Him smile, and the ways He blesses. These devotionals remind us that the fear of the Lord — knowing Him rightly — is the foundation for living wisely.

From there, Volume 5 explores how wisdom plays out in daily choices and relationships. Topics include:

  • Decision-making
  • Friendship
  • Anger and pride
  • Integrity
  • The power of our words
  • Finances and stewardship
  • Human flourishing

But that’s not all. The appendix in Volume 5 is an extensive resource in its own right, with 13 topical studies drawn from Proverbs. These include:

  • Poverty in Proverbs
  • The Noble Lady of Proverbs 31
  • The inner life
  • A profile on human flourishing
  • Proverbs’ teaching on alcohol
  • Financial folly
  • Seven financial principles from Proverbs
  • Diligence
  • The sluggard
  • The tongue
    …and more.

Together, these studies make Volume 5 not only a daily devotional guide but also a reference book you can return to whenever you need biblical wisdom on specific life issues.

This volume is especially helpful for parents, teachers, pastors, counselors, and leaders who want to apply God’s wisdom to the challenges of everyday life.
